Fall Wardrobe Basics

AG Fall Basics_Image.png

As we’re all getting ready for cooler weather and pumpkin-flavored everything, I’m excited to switch my wardrobe from summer to fall!

To me, the most important part of a wardrobe is having basics. Basics are simple, staple items that you can mix and match with a variety of different outfits. They will never go out of style, and it’s so easy to pair them with other pieces you likely already have in your closet.

So, let’s get right into my wardrobe basics that are perfect for fall!

tops, sweaters, & dresses

I’m going to keep this short and sweet—neutrals, especially black and white, are your best friends for your wardrobe, specifically for your tops. They go with everything, they can feel casual and comfy or elevated and dressy, they’re the perfect colors you not only want, but need in your wardrobe.

A white t-shirt is my number one recommendation—and it probably doesn’t hurt to buy a few of them for when they eventually wear down. You will always need a classic simple white cotton tee, no matter the season. I like this v-neck from J.Crew Factory—aka super discounted.

A loose-fitted white button down. This can be worn under cardigans, blazers, jean jackets, on its own—you name it. It’s a versatile piece, that can still be comfortable and make you look like you tried harder picking out your outfit than you did. A new one I’m eyeing is the the Drapey Button-Up from Abercrombie, which comes with a front tie option.

I won’t be the first or the last to tell you that you want an oversized sweater in your closet. I recommend a lighter shade to contrast darker bottoms. Mine is from H&M and no longer available, but this fine-knit option is very similar. P.s. it also wouldn’t hurt to have a darker shade, too (ahem, black).

Just like you need a classic white button-down, you also need a simple black blouse. You can find these ANYWHERE—Nordstrom, H&M, Loft, heck probably Walmart has some cute ones. I recently snagged this puff short sleeve shirt from Target that’s a great, affordable option.

I likely overwear my black, lacy cami, but that’s because it’s my favorite shirt to wear on a night out (LOL, when’s the last time I went “out”? Thanks COVID). BUT when we are able to eventually enjoy our friends’ company outside of social distancing with a mask on, THIS is the top you need! It’s perfect for an all-black, edgy ensemble or throw a comfy cardigan on and you’ll effortlessly achieve a ‘I’m cozy-but-still-sexy’ look. GET. IT.

A black t-shirt dress. This is the only dress you need for fall. It’s cute with sneakers, booties, flats, cardigans, jean jackets, by itself. Have I convinced you?

CARDIGANS & JACKETS

I recommend investing in a higher quality neutral colored cardigan. I am loving my recently purchased Leith cozy long cardigan in olive night. I snagged this from Nordstrom’s annual sale and I can’t get over its soft fabric and deep green color. For reference, I’m wearing an XXS (I’m a shortie at only 5’0 tall!).

A tan or light brown cardigan is another great item to add to your fall closet. I just purchased this Vanessa Sweater-jacket from J.Crew Factory, which is currently fully stocked and on major sale.

Last, but not least, is a jean jacket. Jean jackets are perfect for adding an extra edge, or truly just needing a quick layer to throw on over an already put together outfit. I bought mine at a thrift store actually, but when I do buy a new one I’d likely invest in this Original Trucker Jacket from Levi — I personally like the light wash or black. I’ll do another post soon of other jackets and coats I recommend for fall!

jeans & leggings

If you’re one of the few people still wearing jeans during COVID, you really only need two signature pairs for your fall wardrobe.  A dark wash and a black wash—preferably high rise, but if there’s another style you like more, go with that. In my opinion, jeans are the MOST temperamental clothing item—usually, even if I buy the right size, they still don’t fit the way I like. It’s really important to find a pair that YOU feel confident in, so I recommend shopping where you know you like the fit for your body type. My personal favorite stores for jeans include Gap, American Eagle, Zara, Top Shop, The Loft, or Madewell—if you’re willing to splurge.

I likely don’t even have to say these words, but high waisted black leggings are essential for any closet. They are, of course, a more casual option, but they can also be dressed up with an oversized sweater and bootie. I snagged my favorite pair from TJ Maxx. Here is an affordable option from Target.

shoes

You need three pairs of shoes to complement your fall outfits.

First, black booties. I’m in love with my new Steve Madden Nadalie pointed toe bootie. They’re sleek, the perfect height, and actually pretty comfortable, too. Make sure to order a 1/2 size up. Want a slightly more affordable option? I’ve been eyeing these Carolyn Block Heeled Chelsea Boots from Target. I personally love the snakeskin print texture.

Next, white sneakers. I got mine at an Adidas Outlet store for a steal, but I also like these classic Devin Sneakers from DSW.

Perfect for the office (again, LOL) or for a pumpkin spice latte date with your BFF, a pair of pointed leather loafers will elevate any outfit. I can’t recommend my M.Gemi loafers enough. Unfortunately, mine are out of stock, but I found this similar option called The Stellato, which I also adore in black or tan. M.Gemi is pricey, but their quality is worth the cost. If you’re not ready to invest in a more expensive shoe, there are plenty of less pricey options like this Franco Sarto pair from DSW or these simple Carmel Loafers from Target.

accessories

I’m sure this is a surprise to no one, but a leather tote is great for any season. I bought mine on a trip to Italy last year, but I also really like The Transport Tote from Madewell. TJ Maxx and Marshalls are also great spots to find staple purses for a steep discount.

When you’re not needing a full tote sized purse, I recommend a small black crossbody bag. This can be easily transitioned from day to night. I’ve bought so many of these over the years, including this petite black and snakeskin option from Target, which has a removable strap and can also be used as a clutch. For size reference, this purse just fits my phone and my slim credit card wallet.

I recently jumped on the layered necklaces bandwagon and wow, I’m hooked. I normally wear dainty gold jewelry anyways, but this gives me an excuse to wear SO MANY elegant pieces all at once. I recently bought a few necklaces from Ora and I highly recommend them. My favorite is this necklace set of 3!

Although I love a good statement earring when I’m going ‘out on the town’, for everyday wear, I prefer simple small hoop huggie earrings. I bought TWO pairs of these PAVOI yellow gold cuff earrings from Amazon—so far, I’m very happy with them.

So, there you have it. All my must have pieces to complete your fall wardrobe. Want to know the best part of all these pieces? Many of them will carry over well into other seasons, making them an even better investment if you don’t already own them.

What’s your favorite outfit pairing with these fall staples? Mine is: black jeans, oversized sweater, booties!
