Hanging on to Summer by a Thread

It officially feels like fall in the Northeast! And although oversized sweaters and chic coats are my favorite wardrobe items, I’m still not ready to part with all my summer clothes just yet. My summer dresses are the main pieces I’m having a hard time packing up for their winter hibernation. However, there is one summer dress that I’m leaving out this season: my black floral Cami Mini Dress from Abercrombie.

For summertime, this dress is sweet-as-can-be on it’s own. But, I have a few ideas that make this dress work perfect for fall, too. Looking for a similar black floral dress? Here are two more options, including this baby doll option from ASOS and this skater dress from Lulus.

pair with booties or over-the-knee boots

My first piece of advice to style this dress for fall instead of summer is to pair it with your favorite pair of black ankle booties or over-the-knee boots. Another shoe color option is taupe, like these Anne Klein booties from DSW.

Throw on a jean jacket

If you’re looking for an easy outfit that requires minimal planning, this dress will pair well with a jean jacket in the earlier fall months. Jean jackets are a closet staple for any time of year, but especially for fall. To read more about other fall basics I can’t get enough of, check out THIS post.

Layer with a neutral sweater

Effortlessly transition this summer dress into a fall outfit by throwing on a neutral sweater. Not only do you get an extra layer of warmth, but your dress also transforms into a skirt. Although my sweater is out of stock, this Slouchy Cable Sweater from Abercrombie is another option to achieve this look.

Add a black turtleneck

If you’d rather show off the full dress without covering the top half, consider layering a thin black turtleneck underneath. I promise you’ll get a lot of use out of a black turtleneck on its own — I typically pair mine with dark jeans and camel cardigan.

If a fitted black turtleneck isn’t your style, another option is a cropped black turtleneck sweater like this one from H&M. Throw this sweater over your dress for another simple way to alternate this piece from a dress to a skirt.

finish with black tights

Luckily, it’s still warm enough to go bare legged in Boston, but when the temperature inevitably drops, finish any of these looks with a pair of black tights for a bit of added warmth and to continue to wear this dress even into the winter months.
