Winter Sweater Style Guide
Here in the Northeast, we’ve reached peak winter temperatures, which means I’m in full-on “sweater weather” mode. Sweaters are one of my all time favorite closet staples. They’re versatile, yet classic, and make it easy to look chic while still achieving maximum coziness — a true dream, if you’re asking me.
Today, I’ve rounded up a few sweaters that I adore, as well as a few suggestions for how to style each of these pieces.
But, before diving in, my first tip when shopping for sweaters is to find neutral colors. This will allow you to maximize these pieces and wear them with a variety of outfits. I recommend sticking to grays, blacks, tans, and whites…but, to be honest, this is the same palette I gravitate toward for the majority of my tops regardless if they’re sweaters or not (insert cute monkey emoji covering its eyes). While not the most colorful palette, I promise that these shades will give you the most versatility in your outfit pairings and are the essential building blocks for a balanced wardrobe. Plus, you’ll be able to add bold accessories, such as statement jewelry, to still help you stand out.
FITTED crewneck
Crewnecks are an essential closet staple. These sweaters offer a more fitted look and they’re perfect for layering. I recently purchased this exact sweater from J.Crew, and it’s one of my favorite additions to my closet. Again, if you know me, you’re likely not surprised at my color choice. However, this sweater comes in a few color options — I also own it in white.
If you want a true fitted look, and you’re normally on the border of two sizes, choose the smaller size. But if you want a looser fit or the option to layer something underneath, like a button down or chambray shirt, choose the larger size. I own the camel color in an XXS (my normal size) and the white one in an XS.
I should also mention that this sweater is the SOFTEST material and not itchy at all — something very important to me when buying new sweaters. All around, this is a great option if you’re in need of a new crewneck. Plus, it’s 71% off — only $19.50!
Oversized KNIT Sweater
In addition to fitted sweaters, I recommend creating balance in your wardrobe by adding a few oversized options, too. Oversized sweaters pair well with several bottoms, including jeans, leggings, and skirts. Plus, let’s be honest, they’re more comfortable than a fitted option. I personally like a v-neck line because I like to have the option for an off-the-shoulder look. I also think deeper necklines are more flattering.
If you’re a Queer Eye fan like me, you’ll know that you can “French tuck” tops like this one, which I think helps create an extra dose of polish to your final look. To “French tuck” your top, simply tuck in the very front of your shirt, but leave the sides and back untucked, creating the perfect drape. Tan France knows best, after all.
I have a few oversized sweaters, but I’ve been eyeing this beige knit one from H&M. Again, this sweater comes in a few color options, including my favorite neutrals, plus a pretty muted green. This top is also very affordable at only $16.99.
black oversized turtleneck
In my opinion, black turtlenecks are one of the most versatile sweaters you can purchase. These sweaters can be easily styled for a casual afternoon of errands or an elevated all-black ensemble for a night on the town. For example, for running errands, I’ll throw on this top, a pair of high-waisted skinny jeans, white sneakers, and a baseball cap (don’t forget the “French tuck” trick!). Whereas, if I’m heading out for a night with friends (well, at least in pre-COVID times) and want a bolder outfit, I could style this top with leather leggings, combat boots or black booties, a low bun, and drop gold earrings to stand out while also scoring ultimate coziness. Is anyone else swooning just thinking about when we can get dressed up again?! Grab this sweater from H&M while it lasts, currently on sale for just under $30.
wool tunic
I purchased this sweater from J.Crew when the winter months started and, boy, am I glad I snagged it when I did. This top is perfect for cozy work-from-home days where I want to feel like I got dressed in the morning, but still want to feel like I’m wearing pajamas. It’s form fitted with a bit of extra length than your traditional sweater. It also has two slits on the bottom sides for a little extra flare. I mainly wear this sweater with my Lulu Lemon leggings and fuzzy slippers (because, apparently, that is now my everyday uniform), but, it would also be quite cute tucked into a pair of black jeans or a dark blue wash and so many different shoe options — sneakers, booties, mules, the list goes on. I also can’t wait to wear this sweater in the fall months because it will pair so cute with a vest.
cozy Mock neck Sweater
I just purchased this sweater from Express and I’m SO excited for it to come in the mail. From the pictures online, this sweater looks like the ultimate total package — polished, elevated style AND cozy, fleece, soft, luscious material — in other words, the jackpot. Like my other sweater recommendations, this sweater can also easily transition from day to night. It also comes in a few pretty colors, including ivory, oyster, and moonlight (pictured above)...AND it’s fully stocked in all sizes and 50% off at only $40! I’m planning to share more details on this item once I receive it in the mail, but right now I’m pretty convinced that it is going to be my new favorite item in my closet.
